Yesterday I had one of those heart wrenching moments as the topic of Election Day was brought up by my 2 older school-aged children. They have noticed all the lawn signs. I then educated them on the different names of who was running for which office. Bianca, 8 years old, innocently asked who I was voting for. I told her for the President of the United States I would be voting for John McCain. She then proceeded to ask why, and what was wrong with the other guy. Hmmm... here is one of those teaching moments where I can express my values to my children, I thought. Little did I know I was being taught. Here is how the conversation went:
Mom: "Well, the reason I am voting for John McCain is because he represents some core values that I believe in."
Bianca: "What kind of values?"
Mom: "One value is abortion. Have you ever heard the word abortion?"
Bianca: "No. What is that?"
Mom: "Some states and people believe it is okay when a mommy is pregnant that they can kill the baby inside the mommy."
Bianca: "You mean they make the mommy kill the baby?"
Mom: "No. The mommy chooses to if she wants to. Sometimes people want to have sex (which I had to explain is how mommies and daddies can make babies) and then they accidently get pregnant and really don't want a baby. So they choose to have an operation where it will kill the baby that is growing."
Bianca: "That is so sad! I think I am going to cry. Why would anyone want to hurt babies?"
To myself, "I think I am going to cry too."
Puts it into perspective, eh?
